Guides

BYU’s beach volleyball team has been a recent addition to the school’s athletic program. A popular sports team on campus since 2016, the team made its debut in spring 2016. There are 12 student-athletes on the team, who compete in the West Coast Conference sand volleyball league. A WCC championship was won in the team’s inaugural season, marking its short history with success.

A second-round loss to Pepperdine ended the team’s NCAA tournament run. Even though the team has been successful, it is relatively unknown at the national level. Beach volleyball is not officially recognized by the NCAA, which is part of the reason for this. In the coming years, however, it is likely that the beach volleyball team at BYU will become more visible due to the continued growth of the sport.

As a member of the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball field, the Cougars women’s volleyball team will represent Brigham Young University in 2021. The Cougars play their home games at Smith Fieldhouse under the direction of Heather Olmstead for the last seven years. West Coast Conference teams include the Cougars.

Her team won its second-straight West Coast Conference title and sixth in seven seasons under Olmstead’s leadership in 2021 after going 30-2 and 115-0 in conference. Before losing in the Sweet 16 to Purdue, they defeated Oral Roberts, George Washington, and then George Washington. In the past season, the women’s basketball team held the number one spot.

There are no tiebreakers in volleyball

A volleyball match is decided by the winner of the first set, since tie-breaking breaks are not used in volleyball. A tie-breaker is decided by a “super set,” which consists of a third set of 25 points played according to the same rules as the previous two sets. If the match remains tied after four sets, the fifth set is decided according to the same rules as the first four.
